When the noble fir is no longer so noble, you may want to consider recycling that old Christmas tree - and Waste Management of Antelope Valley would like to help.

Between Monday and Friday, Jan. 11, residents of Lancaster, Palmdale and Quartz Hill can take advantage of the company's curbside tree recycling program.

Residents may leave trees at the curbside on their regular trash service days. The trees must be free of any tinsel, lights and ornaments. Any metal or plastic stands also must be removed.

"We have to make sure that it's clean; no tinsel, no ornaments, no lights, no stands; it's just the tree," said Janette Crawford, Waste Management's community relations manager.

Waste Management has been offering Christmas tree recycling for roughly 20 years. Last season the company collected 16,500 Christmas trees - about 140 tons - in the Antelope Valley.

"It's just the right thing to do. We have a process; it doesn't cost them anything," Crawford said. "All they have to do is put the tree out at the curb or bring it to one of the landfills and throw it in the Dumpster. We'll take care of it and make sure it's turned into something that is usable."

Crawford said a majority of the trees are sent to a facility in Delano, where they will be burned for fuel that can be recycled into electricity. The rest will be turned into mulch.

Residents outside the curbside recycling zones will not be left in the lurch.

Beginning today and continuing through Friday, Jan. 25, Waste Management will offer free Christmas tree drop-offs at the Lancaster landfill, 600 East Ave. F, or the Palmdale landfill, 1200 West City Ranch Road, for free during business hours.
