ACTON – Meadowlark School won two dessert parties for the entire student body in Waste Management's 16th annual Total Trash Out, in which more than 28,000 youngsters from 38 schools collected 10,751 pounds of aluminum cans.
The collection raised more than $18,800 for Antelope Valley schools.
Meadowlark won the grand prizes for the categories of total pounds collected and the total pounds per student.
Total Trash Out, run annually by Waste Management of the Antelope Valley, is an aluminum can contest that helps raise money for schools and teaches children about the importance of recycling and keeping the environment clean.
"For 16 years, the Total Trash Out program has provided participating schools with needed funding and, at the same time, has taught thousands of local students about the importance of recycling," said Lisa Hemenway, the company's recycling compliance manager. "Through this joint effort with students, teachers, parents and neighbors, Total Trash Out not only benefits students and schools, it benefits the entire community."
Since 1991, participating schools have collected a total of 355,540 pounds of cans, or more than 11 million cans, earning over $384,000 for schools.
This year, Waste Management recognized the three youngsters who collected the most cans with gift cards to the Antelope Valley Mall.
The students were Carina Hamblin of Antelope Valley Christian School, who collected 12,800 cans; Christopher Watson of Antelope Valley Christian School, who collected 12,783 cans; and Samantha Lecompte of Meadowlark School, who collected 10,009 cans.
The winning schools and students were announced at the annual awards luncheon on Nov. 14 at the Stanley Kleiner Activity Center in Lancaster City Park.
Lancaster Mayor Henry Hearns and Lancaster city staffer Chris Ludlum were honored guests at the luncheon.
Schools could win two different ways: total pounds collected and total pounds per student.
In addition to monetary awards, the following schools also won prizes:
In the total pounds collected category, Meadowlark won the dessert party for the entire school; Antelope Valley Christian School won a party for 25 students at Mulligan Family Fun Center in Palmdale; Quartz Hill Elementary won 75 recycling containers for its classrooms; Valley View Elementary won sports balls for recess, and Vista San Gabriel Elementary won school supplies gift baskets.
