Press Release
WASTE MANAGEMENT NAMED CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION LEADER
Los Angeles, CA, May 21, 2008 - Waste Management today announced it was named Climate Action Leader™ by the California Climate Action Registry. The company earned the distinction by voluntarily gathering and reporting its greenhouse gas emissions inventory with the organization, of which it is a member.
Members of the Registry voluntarily measure, verify, and publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions. Independent third parties verify the results to ensure compliance with Registry protocols and maintain standardization across participants’ industries.
“This recognition is a tribute to our staff who worked so hard to complete our submission,” said Duane Woods, senior vice president at Waste Management. “Climate change is an important issue to us and in California, where we operate the largest natural gas truck fleet in the state, we are working with our vendors to further improve efficiencies.”
Waste Management is a founding member of The Chicago Climate Exchange and also has implemented an ongoing project to quantify and register its annual greenhouse gas emission credits with the U.S. Department of Energy’s greenhouse gas voluntary registry program.
“Waste Management was the first solid waste company to join the Registry and we are pleased to see that they have earned Climate Action Leader™ status,” said Gary Gero, president of the California Climate Action Registry. “We look forward to their continued leadership in California.”
The California Climate Action Registry is a non-profit private organization started by the State of California to serve as a voluntary greenhouse gas registry to encourage and protect early actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Registry assists organizations to calculate, verify, and publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions. Over 300 leading companies, cities, government agencies, environmental organizations, educational institutions, and non-profits measure and publicly report their emissions through the Registry. www.climateregistry.org
