PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD NAMED FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT
AV resident Larry Chimbole Recognized by League of CA Cities
Antelope Valley, December 14, 2006 – Waste Management of Antelope Valley consultant Larry Chimbole has been awarded with the first-ever Larry Chimbole Public Service Award from the Desert-Mountain Division of the League of California Cities. Chimbole was instrumental in the formation of the Desert-Mountain Division of the League of California Cities, and has served for over 40 years as both an elected official and private citizen. The Division named its award for Larry, a great statesman of unwavering commitment and integrity, as well as a model for all elected officials who heed the calling of public service.
Larry’s first public service was in the US Air Force, where he served during World War II as the radio operator of a B-29 bomber. At the end of the war, Larry moved back to the Antelope Valley and opened up a hardware business. Larry soon found himself involved in local community affairs serving as president of the Palmdale Kiwanis Club and later as president of the Palmdale Chamber of Commerce.
During that time, the community of Palmdale was an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County. Larry spearheaded the 50 Grand Men and led the successful drive for local control, and the city became incorporated in 1962. Larry’s leadership was recognized as he was elected to serve as the city’s first mayor from 1962 through 1968. He was also reelected from 1970 to 1973.
After his local service, Larry was elected as a California State Assemblyman from 1974 through 1978 serving the Antelope Valley and Victor Valley areas. He was selected as President of the Los Angeles County Division of the League of California Cities and as a President of the California Contract Cities Association. Soon after, Larry helped to form the Desert-Mountain Division of the League of California Cities.
Following Larry’s service as an elected official, he served both as chairman and as a campaign chairman for the Antelope Valley Region of the United Way. He also served as a member of the State Board of Landscape Architects and as a member of the Antelope Valley Fair Board of Directors.

Besides his work for Waste Management, Larry still remains active with the Antelope Valley and Palmdale Chambers of Commerce. Larry and wife Vickie have four children: Steven, Patricia, Susan and Wayne.
