ANTELOPE VALLEY STEPS UP CLEAN-UP EFFORTS DURING ENVIRONMENTAL PRIDE MONTH
Residents Help Collect Almost 85 Tons of Recyclable Materials

Antelope Valley, May 22, 2007 – The results are in and it’s clear that Antelope Valley residents worked hard to clean up the community by collecting almost 330 tons of trash, of which 85 tons were recycled, during April’s Environmental Pride Month.

According to Waste Management, of the approximately 330 tons of trash that was collected during various events throughout April, almost 26% was recyclable materials.

“We are proud of the efforts of our neighbors and colleagues and pleased that the various activities throughout the month yielded an impressive recycling rate,” said Bill Minnis, WM’s Senior District Manager in the Antelope Valley.

The first Environmental Pride Week took place in 2001 and was established through the efforts of the Illegal Dumping Taskforce, which includes WM, the County of Los Angeles, the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale and local town councils. This year, the taskforce decided to expand the event from a week to a month in conjunction with Earth Day.

Some of the activities during April included the annual free dump days at the Lancaster and Palmdale landfills and community clean-up events in Acton, Juniper Hills, Littlerock and High Vista. In addition, as part of Palmdale Pride Week, WM arranged for the curbside collection of up to eight extra trash bags from customers living within Palmdale city limits.

Residents were also encouraged to bring their hazardous waste items, such as paint and used motor oil, and electronic waste such as computers and cell phones, to the AV Environmental Collection Center (AVECC). The AVECC is open to the public on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 9 am until 3 pm, and is located at 1200 W. City Ranch Road in Palmdale.

“The growing success of Environmental Pride Week reflects the increasing commitment of Antelope Valley residents to the environment,” noted Minnis. “We are gratified to be able to help local residents to be part of the environmental solution.”
