Earth Day Serves as Reminder for Area Residents
ANTELOPE VALLEY, Calif, April 22, 2004 – Earth Day is today and Antelope Valley residents are being reminded to recycle and properly dispose of waste.
The Earth Day celebration began more than 34 years ago, and that day has evolved into millions of individuals in almost every community participating in events to clean up the environment.
"This Earth Day, Antelope Valley residents are reminded of the daily importance of proper recycling and waste reduction. By recycling properly, we can reduce the volume of solid waste being generated, conserve our resources and create opportunities for economic development in our community," said Chris Fall, Municipal Marketing Manager for Waste Management Antelope Valley.
As part of our Earth Day celebration, Waste Management is sponsoring Total Trash Out XIII, a recycling contest in Antelope Valley among elementary and middle schools. Consisting of an aluminum can collection contest, Total Trash Out helps schools raise money by giving all revenue derived from the program directly to each participating school. The program also raises awareness about recycling among local children and promotes a clean environment. We’ve had huge success in the past, raising over $273,000 over the past 11 years, and we plan to continue in that path,” said Lisa Hemenway, Waste Management Recycling Coordinator. “Kids have a ball while learning about benefits of recycling and participating schools get desperately needed funding – the whole community benefits!”
Students, teachers, parents and the public can participate in Total Trash Out XIII by collecting cans and taking them to their local participating elementary school from April 12 through May 7, 2004. For those schools taking part in the program, Waste Management will provide aluminum can recycling bins, pickup service and weekly updates on which schools are leading in the contest. Alameda Metals will distribute all money earned to the local schools at the end of the contest. The current California Redemption Value is $1.25 per pound.
As Antelope Valley’s disposal provider for over 35 years, Waste Management is dedicated to serving its neighbors – the residents of Antelope Valley – both on the job and in the community. Though timely and efficient trash collection remains a top priority, Waste Management has also been proactive in efforts to promote recycling and community involvement. Service, support and commitment to the community are Waste Management of Antelope Valley’s top priorities.
