WASTE MANAGEMENT HELPS ANTELOPE VALLEY SHOW ITS ENVIRONMENTAL PRIDE
Activities Planned for Local Residents Throughout April

Antelope Valley, April 20, 2007 – For the last six years, the Antelope Valley has celebrated Earth Day during the annual Environmental Pride Week. This year, Waste Management is helping to extend the event into a month-long celebration for local residents and communities.

The first Environmental Pride Week took place in 2001 and was established through the efforts of the Illegal Dumping Taskforce, which includes WM, the County of Los Angeles, the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale and local town councils. This year, the taskforce decided to expand the event from a week to a month in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22.

“Environmental Pride Week has been a success since it began and we’re excited to be involved with the various events and activities throughout the month,” said Bill Minnis, WM’s Senior District Manager in the Antelope Valley. “Our priority for Earth Day and every day is to take care of the environment and the local community and we’re happy to do our part.”

As part of Palmdale Pride Week from April 23-27, WM has arranged for the curbside collection of up to eight extra trash bags from customers living within Palmdale city limits. WM is also helping out with the Lookin’ Good Lancaster clean-up event on April 28, during which students, residents and community volunteers are encouraged to do their part to clean up the city and also plant trees and shrubs to beautify the area. To aid in the clean-up, WM is providing large trash containers to collect the debris and refuse.

Residents are also encouraged to bring their hazardous waste items, such as paint and used motor oil, and electronic waste such as computers and cell phones, to the AV Environmental Collection Center (AVECC) on April 21. The facility is located at 1200 W. City Ranch Road in Palmdale and is open on the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

In addition, during WM’s Free Dump Day on April 28, unincorporated area residents can drop off up to one ton of trash for no charge at the Lancaster Landfill from 8:00 am to 1:45 pm or at the Antelope Valley Landfill from 8:00 am to 3:45 pm.

“Given the success of previous year’s Environmental Pride activities, we’re looking forward to helping out again and doing what we can to keep the Antelope Valley clean,” added Minnis.
