Lancaster Landfill & Recycling Center Commemorates a Decade of Safety

LANCASTER – Lancaster Landfill & Recycling Center is commemorating a record-breaking decade of safety this year. Since 1994, the employees of the Lancaster Landfill & Recycling Center have achieved a perfect safety record and have not recorded a single hour of lost time due to a worksite injury. This accomplishment is recognized by the entire Waste Management organization and has set a new benchmark for safety standards in the company.

“A decade of perfect safety is a great achievement, not only for Waste Management, but the waste disposal industry at large,” said District Manager Karl McCarthy. “Protecting the safety of our community has always been a priority for us, whether its Waste Management employees or Antelope Valley residents, and we look forward to another decade of perfect safety.”

Lancaster Landfill Manager Jim Merritt and Lead Operator of the Lancaster Landfill Joe Soliz credit maintaining this perfect safety record to the diligence of the landfill staff for being able to identify and avoid potentially harmful situations and apply Waste Management’s safety program “Mission to Zero.”

“Lancaster Landfill’s commitment to safety is one of the reasons I’ve stayed with Waste Management for 16 years,” said Soliz. “In terms of its employees and the community, it’s a company that truly has a soul.”

Merritt added, “The crew really looks out for each other in Lancaster.”

The M2Z program is employed in all of Waste Management’s 293 active landfills nationwide and mandates “zero tolerance for unsafe actions, unsafe decisions, unsafe conditions, unsafe equipment and unsafe attitudes.” The program also requires regular monitoring and measuring of a facility’s safety performance to track its results and ensure employee safety and satisfaction.

To mark Lancaster Landfill & Recycling Center’s historic safety record, a gala celebration will be held at the Park Plaza Hotel in Lancaster on February 21, 2004 where individualized plaques will be handed to each of the facility’s employees.

“The entire company is proud of the Lancaster Landfill staff and their dedication to making the workplace safe,” said Los Angeles Market Area Vice President Dan Shoener. “They have worked hard to achieve this honor and have set an inspiring example that we should all follow.”
