Waste Management Hosts Clean-up in Lancaster
Waste Management Teams Up with the County of Los Angeles
to Clear Illegal Dumping Site in Eastern Lancaster
As part of its commitment of “Keeping Antelope Valley Clean,” Waste Management, the region’s local disposal provider, cleared waste from an illegal dumping site in eastern Lancaster from January 26th through 29th. Taking place at a site adjacent to Big Rock and about 14 miles east of Lancaster in the eastern Antelope Valley, the clean-up removed over 420 tons of waste from the area – equivalent to approximately 40 large school buses – and was accomplished with the assistance of the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“We are glad to be able to help the local community clean-up the site in eastern Lancaster and protect its public health,” said District Manager Karl McCarthy. “Part of keeping our environment healthy is ensuring that everyone does their part to keep our community clean. This is a belief that Waste Management has been committed to since the beginning and the reason we host similar clean-ups in a variety of neighborhoods in the Antelope Valley throughout the year.”
Over the course of four days, hand crews from Waste Management and the Los Angeles County Fire Department helped clear furniture, trash, appliances, vehicles, construction debris, tires and other waste. Loaded onto collection trucks provided by Waste Management, the items were transported to the Lancaster Landfill Recycling and Disposal Facility for removal. The California Integrated Waste Management Board also helped to fund the effort by providing $10,000 toward clean-up costs with Waste Management of Antelope Valley contributing over $25,000 in rental trucks, labor and disposal costs.
The clean-up in eastern Lancaster was the first scheduled effort of the year for Waste Management and is just one of many community initiatives the company has spearheaded throughout its more than 35 year history in the Antelope Valley. In addition to past clean-ups in such communities as Littlerock, other programs include the yearly school recycling campaign “Total Trash Out!” and the more than $100,000 in annual donations to such organizations as the Antelope Valley Boys and Girls Club, National Federation of the Blind, Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Boosters and the California Highway Patrol.
