Total Trash Out XIV Kicks-Off in Antelope Valley Schools
Annual Event Teaches Kids about Recycling and Raises Money for Local Schools

Antelope Valley, Calif: January 26, 2005 Start collecting aluminum cans now! Waste Management's annual Total Trash Out XIV recycling contest kicks-off in Antelope Valley on April 13th.

Total Trash Out is a four-week aluminum can drive contest between local elementary schools, that helps schools raise money by giving all revenue derived from the program directly to each participating school. The program also teaches children about the importance of recycling and the value of a clean environment.

"We’re excited to bring Total Trash Out back to Antelope Valley! Last year, Antelope Valley schools collected 22,778 pounds of aluminum cans and raised $28,472.50," said Lisa Hemenway, Waste Management Recycling Compliance Manager. "Kids have fun collecting aluminum cans, learning about the benefits of recycling and earning money for their school – the whole community benefits!"

Students, teachers, parents and the public can participate in Total Trash Out XIV by collecting cans and taking them to their participating school from April 13th through May 11, 2005. For those schools taking part in the program, Waste Management will provide aluminum can recycling bins and pickup service. At the end of the four weeks, all bins are collected and transported to Alameda Metals for the full California Redemption Value of $1.25 per pound.

"Waste Management is pleased to be able to help raise funds for our local schools, while also teaching the value of conserving our natural resources," continued Hemenway. "Over the last thirteen years, Total Trash Out has raised over $301,000 for Antelope Valley schools. Our goal is to exceed last year’s totals."

Two schools will be recognized as grand-prize winners: the school that collects the most pounds of aluminum cans overall and the school that collects the most pounds of aluminum cans per student. In addition to receiving the full California Redemption Value for their cans, winning schools will also receive a new computer with a printer and a school carnival that includes a dessert party, an Air Bounce, pony rides and a petting zoo. The Waste Management Robot, Cycler, will also make a special visit!

Other prizes for participating schools include: tickets to "TTO Night" at Jethawk Stadium, AV Mall's Shopping For Students Points, Funland USA and many more.

During April and May, Cycler will visit schools to cheer them on and teach them more about recycling and how they can make a difference in their communities.
